A New Patent from the Scientists from FNUSA-ICRC (St. Anne’s University Hospital – International Clinical Research Center)

This Czech patent is the latest result of the work of scientists from St. Anne’s University Hospital International Clinical Research Center (FNUSA-ICRC). The new solutions are going to help, in particular, patients suffering from cardiac arrhythmia.

Scientists from the Interventional Cardiac Electrophysiology team, led by Dr. Zdeněk Stárek, PhD, participated to a great extent in inventing an alternating electroporation generator. Currently, thermal radio-frequency energy is used as a standard in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, i.e. ablation (literally, isolation) of abnormal cardiac tissues, which, however, carries the risk of damaging surrounding structures, e. g. the oesophagus. Suitable alternatives surmounting the above-mentioned limits are represented by non-thermal ablation methods, which allow avoiding typical complications related to standard ablation therapy. However, so far, there has been no solution that would not involve general anaesthesia or the risk of muscle contractions.

An electroporation generator is a non-thermal energy source, which is the first alternative to current thermal technology allowing the ablation of cardiac tissue. ‘This source of energy is in many aspects better than the existing technology with regard to safety and the sustainability of the heart’s normal rhythm. The alternating electroporation generator has been designed as the first and, so far, the only electroporation generator intended directly for use in interventional electrophysiology,’ stated Dr. Stárek.

The Czech patent was registered together with the Brno University of Technology. Currently, the European patent is pending, too.
