Erysipelas

Erysipelas is an acute infectious disease of the skin which is, in the vast majority of the cases, caused by the bacteria of the genus streptococci (Streptococcus pyogenes), and, rarely, also by stafylococci (Staphylococcus aureus). In extremely rare cases, this disease can also be caused by other types of bacteria, such as Klebsiella pneumonie or Hemophillus influenzae. The disease commonly affects women, but it manifests in men earlier.

Patient: Good morning, doctor. I wanted to consult you regarding a rash or something of that kind, which has appeared on my leg.

Doctor: Good morning, Mr Redding. Of course; can you show it to me?

Patient: I noticed it yesterday. My instep is red and swollen and there are dimples in it, as if I had cellulitis.

Doctor: Yes, I can see it now. It looks like erysipelas. Have you had a fever?

Patient: Yes, I had a fever of 39 degrees and I felt sick. What is erysipelas?

Doctor: It is an infection of the skin, most commonly caused by streptococci. Do you still have a fever?

Patient: I see. No, I don't think I have a fever now.

Doctor: Good. I'll prescribe some antibiotics – you're not allergic to penicillin, are you?

Patient: I'm not.

Doctor: Ok, I'll give you antibiotics for ten days. Nausea and any fever should fade away in the course of a day or two. If they don't, or if there are any changes on your skin, please come back immediately.

Patient: Ok. Thank you very much, doctor. Good bye.

Doctor: You're welcome. Good bye.
